Restoring 200 Tonnes of Clumped Urea

A heavily compacted stockpile of 200 tonnes of urea was successfully processed using the FlipScreen BL85. Using telehandler; the unit efficiently broke down hardened clumps into flowable material - returning the product to usable condition. The screening process delivered exceptional recovery performance, generating only 20 kg of waste and demonstrating the efficiency of controlled screening.

01 / Challenge

A customer had approximately 200 tonnes of urea stored outdoors for several months, where prolonged exposure to moisture caused significant clumping and hardening throughout the stockpile. What was once a free-flowing fertiliser became difficult to manage, transport and apply efficiently. The material presented several operational risks, including spreader blockages, inconsistent flow rates, uneven field application and increased downtime during handling. In addition to productivity concerns, the hardened product risked becoming a costly loss if it could not be restored to a usable condition. The situation required a practical, efficient solution capable of breaking down compacted masses while preserving as much usable material as possible and minimising waste generated during the recovery process.

02 / Solution

Using a FlipScreen BL85 mounted to their telehandler, the customer processed the entire stockpile directly into their bin, eliminating the need for multiple handling stages. The BL85 efficiently broke apart hardened clumps, screening and separating compacted material while preserving the integrity of the granules. As the drum rotated, oversized lumps were reduced and returned to a consistent, uniform particle size. The recovered urea flowed freely once again, allowing for reliable loading, accurate spreading and improved operational efficiency. This streamlined process minimised product loss, reduced downtime and delivered a practical recovery solution without additional processing equipment.

03 / Result

After screening the full 200 tonnes, total product loss was exceptionally low, amounting to only around 20 kg across the entire stockpile. The result demonstrated the efficiency of controlled screening and the ability to recover high-value material that may otherwise have been discarded. Recovery rates of this level significantly reduce waste, protect margins and restore confidence in stored fertiliser quality.

In the customer’s own words:

“We had 200T in that shed that had been there for months and we lost 20kg — great attachment, works a treat.”
